Keep Your Voice Healthy


Whether you are a singer who makes a living singing for a crowd, or a stay-at-home mother who occasionally uses her voice to get her to kids in line, taking care of your voice is important. However, there are some common misconceptions about how best to take care of your voice.

1. Sleep to restore your vocal cords. Your voice, like the rest of your body, needs sleep in order to repair itself, especially after heavy use. Make sure that you get plenty of sleep in order to keep your voice in healthy shape.


2. Lubricate your lips with water. Drinking plenty of water is a must in order to obtain and maintain a healthy voice. Your body is made of over 70 percent water, and in order to keep your voice good shape, you have to keep it moisturized. This will also help your body produce the saliva secretions necessary to keep the vocal cords lubricated. Drink at least 64 oz. of water or non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated liquid every day.


3. Keep your voice healthy by staying away from unhealthy foods. Foods that are drenched in sauce, like spaghetti, and even fatty foods can cause irregularities in vocal production. Avoid dairy products before an event when you will use your voice a lot, as it cause hyper production of mucus.


4. Avoid abusing your vocal cords by smoking, consuming excess alcohol, yelling or screaming. Smoking increases the chances of cancer, and encourages the growth of polyps on your vocal cords. Yelling can cause your voice to become hoarse, which may lead to temporarily losing the ability to speak.


5. Stretch your voice before doing heavy activity. Whether you are singing, or speaking for an extended period of time, warming up your voice is essential to keeping it healthy. Singers should practice scales in ascending and descending order while incorporating easy songs. If you are not singing, simply allow your voice to come out at a near whisper; increase the volume to a near shout with one deep breath. Press the air from your diaphragm when exhaling for better control.
