Get Air Out Of A Pool Pump

The function of a pool pump is to suck water from the pool, pass it through the filter and then send it back into the pool. Too much air in the system or obstructions will make the pump lose its prime and will prevent the water from flowing efficiently. Running the pump without water could damage the pump and motor. Before re-priming the pump, make sure there are no obstructions in the skimmer, and then check that the water level in the pump strainer box and the pool is adequate. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Make sure the pool pump and heater are off, and then open the air relief valve on the top of the pool filter.

2. Close the skimmer valves but leave the main valve open. Using a garden hose or bucket, fill the pump basket with a few gallons of water.

3. Look for deterioration or cracks on the O-ring and pump lid. Lubricate the O-ring with petroleum jelly if needed and then hand-tighten back in place.

4. Move the filter valve to the "Filter" position and turn on the pool pump. Allow a few minutes for the pump to prime.

5. Slowly open the skimmer valve once the pump begins circulating the water successfully. Air may enter the pump while it's open, and you could lose the prime in the pump again. If this happens, close the valve, allow the pump to circulate the water then slowly open the valve again. Repeat opening and closing the valve until no more air enters the pump while in the open position.

6. Close the air relief valve on the top of the pool filter when the water flow is adequate.
