License A Gas Station In Michigan

The Michigan Department of Agriculture issues gas station licenses.

If you plan to operate a gas station in Michigan that sells gasoline, diesel, biodiesel, biodiesel blends or hydrogen fuel to the general public, you must obtain a retail motor fuel outlet license from the Michigan Department of Agriculture. A separate license is required for each retails sales location. Licenses may not be transferred from one owner to another. To obtain a license for your gas station, submit an application to the Department of Agriculture.

Instructions

1. Download a Motor Fuels Retail Outlet License Application from the Michigan Department of Agriculture website.

2. Determine whether you meet the pre-application requirements. First, your gas station must be in compliance with the Michigan Motor Fuels Quality Act. The Act sets out operating standards in several areas, including motor fuel labeling and testing, equipment maintenance and testing and on-site record keeping. Second, if you have incurred fines under the Motor Fuels Quality Act in the past, you must ensure that those fines have been paid in full. Third, your license will be denied if you have, within the last two years, incurred a felony conviction under the Michigan Weights and Measures Act as it relates to motor fuels.

3. Determine how many grades of gasoline and diesel fuel you will offer for sale. This information must be included on the application.

4. Complete the application. If you are operating as a sole proprietorship, or if you are the president of a corporation applying for licensure, only your personal information is required. If you are operating as a partnership, your partner's information is required in addition to yours. If you are based outside Michigan, you must include contact information for a Michigan resident agent. Include your Federal/Tax ID number on the application.

5. Mail your application, along with any supporting documentation and fees, to the indicated address. License processing generally takes 60 to 120 days.
