Hook Up A Dj Power Amp

Run the main line out from the mixer to the DJ power amp.

The power amp is the core of a DJ's sound system, the component that drives the speakers and kicks out the sound. A typical DJ system involves two or more audio sources, such as CD players, turntables and laptop computers, connected to a mixing board. The main output from the mixing board connects to the power amp, which is hooked up to the speakers. Get to the gig at least an hour before the event starts to allow enough time for setup and sound testing.

Instructions

1. Connect the two plugs on one end of a stereo cable to the Main OUT jacks on the mixing board, either on top or along the back edge of the board. Hook up the two plugs on the other end to the Line IN jacks on the power amp, making sure the cable from the mixer's left audio channel is also plugged into the amp's left channel. Stereo cables are usually color-coded to keep the connections straight.

2. Attach the two wires on one end of a speaker wire to the positive and negative terminals on the back of the amp. If necessary, strip insulation from the ends to expose fresh wire. The speaker wires connect by pulling up on the red (positive) and black (negative) terminals to reveal two small holes for inserting the wires.

3. Hook up the other ends of each speaker wire to the back of the speakers in the same manner, matching the positive wire to the positive terminal.

4. Connect audio components such as CD players, turntables and computer laptops to the mixing board with stereo cables, using a different set of inputs on the mixer for each component. Connect the white plug to the left input and the red plug to the right.
