Host A 5k Fundraiser

Hit the ground running with the planning of your 5K fundraiser.

Are you looking for a way to combine fundraising and fitness? Why not host a 5K event to raise money for your organization or a charity of your choice? Competitive runners and casual walkers alike enjoy coming together in the name of a worthy cause. Hosting a 5K event, however, requires weeks of planning and preparation and a team of dedicated volunteers. So gather a group of those who support your organization or charity and start working well in advance of your desired event date.

Instructions

Before the Race

1. Set up a meeting of all the volunteers involved in hosting the 5K fundraiser. Discuss preferred dates, times, and locations. Discuss how many people you think will want to participate in the event and what special activities or give-aways you hope to have at the event, such as food and T-shirts. Assign roles for the various responsibilities.

2. Contact local government and police departments to obtain the necessary permits. Determine the exact route of your 5K, taking into consideration your anticipated needs for parking, registration, finish line festivities, and the availability of restrooms.

3. Make arrangements for security at the event, if necessary.

4. Place orders for event T-shirts, food, water, banners, and any other give-aways or items you'll need for the event.

5. Set the cost of registration for your event, making sure to cover your expenses as well as raise money for your organization or charity. Create an online registration process through Active.com or on your organization's own website.

6. Advertise the 5K fundraiser to other supporters of your organization or charity, and all others you think might be interested in participating.

7. Make arrangements for water and first aid stations along the course and at the finish line.

Race Day

8. Set up registration tables, money boxes, and banners several hours before the start of the race. Set up water and aid stations as planned. Set up food, T-shirts, and other give-aways (if any) at the finish line.

9. Check that all arrangements for parking, restrooms, and security are in place. Make sure that all of the volunteers are present to help run registration and help with other race activities.

10. Open registration one hour before the 5K begins. Direct all participants to the starting line.

11. Shoot the starting gun at the scheduled race time, and watch everyone go. After the race, announce the fundraising totals and celebrate.
