Get A 5k Sanctioned

Sanctioned races attract serious runners.

USA Track and Field officially sanctions events across the nation. Getting a 5K sanctioned requires a simple and straightforward process. Having a race sanctioned boosts credibility and adds status to the event. Sanctioning a track and field event allows organizers to display the USATF emblem and have the race covered by liability insurance. Participants enjoy knowing that USATF officially records all race statistics and that if there is a confrontation between event organizers and athletes, USATF representatives will work to settle the dispute.

Instructions

1. Go online and visit the USATF official website. Type in "Sanctions" into the search text box at the top of the page. Click the magnifying glass icon. Select the Event Sanctions link.

2. Click on the "Printable Application" tab. Scroll the list of states and choose the USATF association that will oversee your event. Associations are alphabetized. Click the "Go" tab.

3. Read over the list of fees associated with sanctioning. Prepare to pay a total of two fees -- an association fee and a national fee. Fees vary by association and rise as the amount of expected participants increases. A 100-person race may pay $25 to $50 in fees, while a 15,000-person race may require a $5,000 fee. Download and print the application forms and all necessary addenda. Complete all forms. Send all forms and fees to the listed USATF association address.
