Get A Tax Id Number For A Nonprofit Business

Non-profits are organizations that have a 501(c)3 status. This status is achieved by incorporating your 501(c)3 in your state of residence. If you are part of a non-profit organization, this status enables you to apply for a tax-exempt status from the federal government. Even though your non-profit organization is exempt from certain taxes, it still needs a Federal Tax Identification Number (FEIN), otherwise known as an Employer Identification Number (EIN) or Tax Identification Number (TIN).

Instructions

1. Navigate to the IRS EIN Assistant website listed in the reference section.

2. Click on the Begin Application button.

3. Click on View Additional Types, Including Tax-Exempt and Governmental Organizations and then click on Continue.

4. Click on the radio button next to the description that best describes your non-profit organization. For example, click on the radio button next to Church-Controlled Organization, then click on Continue.

5. Read the definition of your organization provided by the IRS to make sure it accurately describes your non-profit type. Then click Continue.

6. Fill in the interview style application. You will be asked to provide identifying details about your non-profit organization, including the reason that you are applying for a tax ID number. Once you have finished entering the information, you'll be provided with an instant EIN.
