Make A Round Table Runner

A round table runner can be used on any table, but is especially well-suited to a round table. You can create this project with wool felt and a few basic embroidery stitches, making it appropriate for a beginner. The designs on the runner make it suitable for most any decor. Make several and change the colors to enhance your seasonal or holiday decorations.

Instructions

1. Spread the newspaper out on your work surface. Using a compass, draw a 15-inch circle on the newspaper. This is your round table runner base pattern. Place the heart-shaped cookie cutter on the newspaper and trace around it. This will be the pattern for your flowers. Cut out the newspaper patterns.

2. Place the off-white wool felt on your work surface. Fold the felt in half. Pin the round table runner base pattern through both layers of the off-white wool felt. Cut the round table runner base pieces out.

3. Place the light rose wool felt on your work surface and pin the heart-shaped pattern. Cut the heart-shaped felt out. Repeat seven more times.

4. Place the light dusty green wool felt on your work surface and pin the silk rose leaf. Cut around the shape of the rose leaf. Repeat 15 more times for a total of 16 green wool felt leaves.

5. Place the scrap of light yellow wool felt on your work surface and trace around a penny eight times. Cut out the circle shapes for your flower centers.

6. Set one round table runner base aside. On the remaining round table runner base, space the light rose colored hearts around the outside edge with the top bumps of the hearts a 1/2 inch from the base edge and the point of the hearts facing toward the center. Pin the hearts in place.

7. Slip the ends of two leaves under opposite sides of a heart at an angle and pin in place. Repeat for the remaining flower hearts. Place the yellow flower centers over the point of the hearts and pin in place.

8. Embroider the pieces to the round table runner base. Cut an arm's length of floss to match the color of the piece you are embroidering and separate the floss into two strands. Thread the embroidery needle. Embroider a blanket stitch around the heart flowers and a whip stitch around the leaves and the flower centers (see Resources).

9. Place the embroidered round table runner base on top of the other round table runner base piece. Match the edges even and pin. Embroider a blanket stitch around the round table runner base edge, connecting the two layers together.
