Make A Thin Mold

Make a thin mold using polymer clay.

Instead of making a ceramic or plaster mold, it is possible to make a thin mold using lightweight polymer clay. This enables you to create a mold of an object in less time and using less material than you would need otherwise. You can purchase all of the necessary materials to make a thin mold at any arts and crafts store.

Instructions

1. Roll out 1 lb. of polymer clay into a sheet that measures 1/2 inch thick using a rolling pin.

2. Cut out a rectangle from the clay sheet using a clay knife to measure 12 inches long, 6 inches wide. Cut the rectangle in half lengthwise to create two 6-inch squares.

3. Place an object onto one of the squares, then drape the other clay square on top of the object. Press the clay squares together firmly, then gently pull the clay squares apart. Remove the object.

4. Place the two clay squares on top of an aluminum baking dish with the impression sides facing up.

5. Bake the thin clay mold halves in a 200-degree Fahrenheit oven for 10 minutes, then allow the halves to cool for 30 minutes.

6. Press 6 oz. of polymer clay in between to two thin mold halves, then pull the halves apart again. Bake the casted clay object in a 200-degree Fahrenheit oven, as before.
