Lookup A Tax Id

Lookup a Tax ID

A Federal Tax Identification Number or your Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a 9 digit number assigned to you in order to identify your business tax accounts if you employ others. The IRS uses the EIN to determine which business tax returns you are supposed to file. EINs are used by a variety of people including: employers, sole proprietors, corporations, partnerships, non-profit associations and trusts. You should use your EIN on all correspondence with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or the Social Security Administration (SSA), but never use the EIN in place of your social security number.

Instructions

1. Locate a bank statement or other statement from an account you opened using your tax ID number. If the statement doesn't have the number on it, you can call the bank or company with whom you opened the account and ask for the number. If you used the number for a local license, you can call that agency and ask them as well.

2. Look for the form the IRS sent you telling you your number. It is possible you filed this form away for future reference.

3. Contact the IRS and ask them to search for your EIN by calling the Business and Specialty Tax Line at (800) 829-4933. The hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday. According to the IRS, "An assistor will ask you for identifying information and provide the number to you over the telephone, as long as you are a person who is authorized to receive it." Anyone who has received an EIN can retrieve the number, as can their heirs or the executors of their estates.

4. Use a web site like KnowX.com and get the tax ID number of almost any company. For a fee, you can enter in your search terms and get this number.
