Horizontally Wire Wrap Seaglass

Sea glass looks frosted when dry.

Sea glass is often found hidden among shoreline rocks and maintains the texture of a smooth stone. It achieves its characteristics from years of polishing via salt water, wind and sand. Colorful sea glass stones are often used as jewels for necklace and pendant charms. Wrapping wire around the glass prevents the need for the charm maker to damage the glass surface by drilling a hole or applying epoxy. Horizontal wrapping, specifically, should also involve one or two diagonal wraps to ensure the charm is safe and secure within the wire casing.

Instructions

1. Choose a 1/2-by-1/2-inch sea glass stone to make your charm.

2. Pinch the center of an 8-inch-long 18- to 20-gauge wire. Pull the right half of the wire taught behind the left half to create a circular eyelet - or bail - in the middle of the wire. Wrap the left half of the wire around the neck of the right half three or four times. Remove the pliers. The eyelet is now complete.

3. Place the stone flush against the bottom end of the neck.

4. Drape the remaining right-side wire over the top right corner of the stone. Wrap the wire around the top right corner. Wrap the wire around the back side of the stone in a horizontal fashion. Pull the wire around to the front of the stone and across the body in a horizontal fashion. Continue wrapping the wire around the body until 1/2 inch of wire remains.

5. Grip the free end of the wrapped wire with needle nose pliers. Roll the 1/2 inch of wire into a circle until the circle is flush with the left-side edge of the stone.

6. Drape the left-side wire over the top left corner of the stone. Wrap the wire around the top left corner. Wrap the wire around the back side of the stone in a horizontal fashion. Pull the wire around to the front of the stone and across the body. Continue wrapping the wire around the body in horizontal fashion until 1/2 inch of wire remains.

7. Grip the free end of the wrapped wire from Step 6 with needle nose pliers. Roll the 1/2 inch of wire into a circle until the circle is flush with the right-side edge of the stone.
