Singers must exercise extreme caution when they become hoarse.
A sore throat and hoarse voice are nuisances for anyone, but they are especially stressful for singers. Singers experience voice-loss for the same reasons anybody does; illness or overuse. However, the standard for vocal wellness is different for voice artists. They rely on their instrument to achieve artistic excellence. Treatment for throat ailments is more aggressive for vocalists, as a result. With focused treatment, they should have no trouble regaining their full octave range in no time.
Instructions
1. Visit a doctor as soon as your voice becomes hoarse. A doctor is best equipped to tell you what is wrong, what caused the irritation and how best to remedy the problem. He can also determine how long you should expect to have diminished abilities.
2. Treat the primary condition that caused the hoarseness, when appropriate. If a cold led to the loss of your voice -- treat the cold too -- rather than your throat alone.
3. Rest your voice. All people have trouble resting their voices, but silenced singers may feel lost entirely; nevertheless, rest is the best remedy. Try not to speak at all. Limit your contact with other people, so that you are not compelled to talk. The more you rest, the sooner you will regain your strength.
4. Avoid whispering. Whispering puts more strain on your vocal cords than talking: It will only worsen your condition.
5. Keep your throat warm. Take hot showers. Consume warm liquids like tea and soup. Heat is soothing and promotes repair. Also, warm air usually has higher moisture content than cold air. Dry air is detrimental to your vocal cords. Stay warm and hydrated to promote swift recovery. When you return to practice; do so in warm environments -- with limited or no air conditioning -- to protect your throat.
6. Use remedies like honey, throat lozenges and over-the-counter throat medication to soothe your throat.
