Get Strong Lungs

Smoking is one of the main causes of lung damage.

Breathing deeply not only feels good, but also contributes to optimal lung health. Humans have two lungs, which are responsible for removing carbon dioxide from the blood and making sure oxygen gets to the blood. Keeping the lungs healthy through exercise and cutting out bad habits, like smoking, are also ways to make sure you'll be blowing out all of your birthday candles in one breath as you get older.

Instructions

1. Perform deep breathing exercises on a daily basis. Sit cross-legged or in a yoga position and breathe deeply from the diaphragm/stomach for five to 20 minutes. Your stomach will expand if done correctly. Breathing in this manner fills the lungs with air from the bottom of the lungs up.

2. Make sure you get enough exercise. Adding vigorous exercise to your daily routine, like running, running up flights of stairs, soccer, dancing and swimming, is essential to lung health as it makes the lungs work harder. Holding your breath under water will help you hold in your breath easier and use air more efficiently.

3. Try to sing on a daily basis, as the more you sing, the more you increase the volume of air your lungs can hold.

4. Cut out bad habits, such as smoking, which damages lung cells and can cause diseases like lung cancer.

5. Add a fish oil supplement to your daily diet. Fish oil reduces inflammation, which is the main culprit behind airway issues like asthma.

6. Work in a well-ventilated area if you are going to use products like household cleaners, many of which are toxic. Wear a face or gas mask if working with chemicals that create toxic dust or fumes.
