Find The Tax Id For A Company

The tax ID number may also be found on an income tax return.

A company's tax ID is used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to identify a business for tax-reporting purposes. The nine-digit number is unique to each business and is necessary for corporations, partnerships and nonprofit organizations. Employees of a company are required to provide the tax ID of their employer when filing federal taxes. If you need the tax ID of a company, there are several ways to locate it.

Instructions

1. Request the tax ID from your employer's payroll or accounting department. The department should be able to provide the number to you.

2. Check your W-2s or 1099s from previous years for the tax ID number. If you were an employee, you received a W-2 from your employer. If you were a contractor, the tax ID can be found on form 1099. The tax ID number for the company will be listed on your W-2 as the "Employer Identification Number."

3. Search for the tax ID on the Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis and Retrieval system (EDGAR). EDGAR is a free-access online database operated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Search by company name. The tax ID is listed as the company's IRS number.
