Competitive eating has been around since the first creature snatched something out of the mouth or hands of another and ate it. You could venture that one aspect of survival of the fittest means eating the most first. Now with our abundance of food and gluttony, competitive eating has arrived as a true sport. There are a few different organizations that offer information, standards and schedules of events, the International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE) and the Association of Independent Competitive Eaters (AICE).
Instructions
1. Peruse through the websites for IFOCE and the AICE. There is lot to learn about the different approaches and the key competitors that get press from each group. The IFOCE is the most referred to organization and their events are sponsored, money making deals. They do require exclusivity from their eaters to protect their sponsors. As well, they promote the concept of zero home based training for the competitive eater's safety. They advocate only speed eating at sanctioned events where medical personnel are on hand. The AICE is more loosely based and they promote picnic-style eating, meaning no crushing or soaking; the food is eaten as served.
2. Check out the books written on the topic, "Eat This Book" by Ryan Nerz or "Horsemen of the Esophagus: Competitive Eating and the Big Fat American Dream" by Jason Fagone are two examples.
3. Try your stomach at any number of restaurant challenges. This is a good way to see if competitive eating is for you and if you are successful, it can be a good way to get recognition as an up and coming talent.
4. Attend the events themselves. See for yourself first hand, and if possible meet the competitors and ask questions. When you are ready, enter and eat.
