Charity walks and runs are becoming increasingly popular. These events allow you to get in shape, meet new friends and raise money for a good cause. However, the fundraising goals can be a bit overwhelming. Learn raise money for your charity walk or run in a few simple steps.
Instructions
1. Write an old-fashioned letter, explaining the event's details, your fundraising goal and your connection to the charity's mission. Include pictures of yourself training or of that special person you are honoring by completing your charity walk or run. Mail the letter, including a donor form (most charities provide them) and self-addressed stamped envelope for people to include donations.
2. Create a website. Most charities will you help you set up a designated website that accepts secure online donations. You can personalize these websites with photos, stories and updates about your training. If your charity does not offer online giving, set up your own website to share your story and solicit donations for your cause. Once you have set up your website, email it to everyone you know, including friends, family, work colleagues, professional service providers and acquaintances. Be sure to update your website frequently so people will have a reason to keep coming back and give more money.
3. Start a blog. A blog, which you can set up for free online at sites like Blogger or TypePad, can help you document your progress as you train for your charity walk or run. Add stories, pictures, fundraising updates and links to the charity's homepage as well as your fundraising website. Update it frequently and encourage comments and feedback. Link to your teammates' blogs to help generate more traffic for your site (see Resources below).
4. Plan a party. Contact a local restaurant or bar you frequent and ask the manager to help you throw a happy hour. They'll get business, and you'll raise money for your charity walk or run; it's a win-win. Some restaurants will also donate a portion of the proceeds of a night's sales to your cause.
5. Host a raffle. Sell tickets for a small amount (between $2 and $5). Ask local businesses to donate items such as gift certificates, concert tickets, signed sports memorabilia and other popular items, and then raffle them off to your friends. People may even throw in a few extra dollars for the cause.
